Got GAS? Me too, well I used to!
Gear Acquisition Syndrome or (GAS) is a trap some of us fall into with regards to making our content. Yes, I too have suffered from GAS from time to time đ
In the age of social media, YouTube, and podcasts, itâs easy to get caught up in the belief that the latest camera, the most expensive lighting setup, or the highest-quality microphone are the keys to success. But Iâm here to tell you thatâs a myth.
Letâs start with cameras. Yes, a high-end camera can produce stunning visuals, but if you donât know how to frame a shot, capture the right moments, or tell a compelling story, it wonât matter how much you spend on it. Some of the most popular and impactful videos have been shot on smartphones. Why? Because the creators focused on content over quality.
Lighting is another big one. You can have the best lighting setup, but if you donât understand how to use light to create mood, emphasize your subject, or enhance your story, itâs just wasted potential. Simple, natural lighting often does the trick, and learning to work with what you have can actually make you more versatile and creative.
And microphones, ah audioâŠ. A clear, crisp sound is important, but investing in a top-of-the-line microphone wonât improve your delivery, scriptwriting, or ability to engage your audience. You can start with a basic microphone and focus on delivering value through your words and how you connect with your listeners.

So, what makes a good content creator? First and foremost, itâs about providing value.
Ask yourself: What can I offer my audience that will make their lives better, easier, or more entertaining? Content creation isnât about the creatorâitâs about the audience.
In my opinion, here are some key elements that truly make a difference:
1. Storytelling: The ability to tell a compelling story is invaluable. Whether youâre vlogging, podcasting, or writing, a good story keeps your audience engaged and coming back for more. Focus on crafting narratives that resonate with your viewers or listeners.
2. Consistency: Regularly putting out content builds trust and reliability. It shows that youâre committed and that your audience can depend on you for fresh, new material.
3. Authenticity: People can tell when youâre being genuine. Share your true self, your experiences, and your passions. Authenticity creates a deeper connection with your audience.
4. Engagement: Interact with your audience. Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and create a community. Engagement shows that you value your audience and are interested in what they have to say.
5. Continuous Learning: Content creation is a constantly evolving field. Stay curious, learn new skills, and adapt to changes. Improving your craft will naturally elevate your content over time.
6. Creativity and Innovation: Donât be afraid to try new things. Experiment with different formats, topics, and styles. Creativity keeps your content fresh and exciting.
Remember, the best gear in the world wonât compensate for a lack of these qualities.
Start with what you have, focus on providing value, and invest in learning and improving your skills.
The gear can enhance your content, but it can never replace the core elements that truly matter.
